Stryker hip implants are manufactured by Stryker Howmedica Corporation, a leading manufacturer of hip implants located in Michigan. Hip implants are used to replace damaged parts of the hip. This type of replacement surgery is usually performed at the point when pain from the damaged hip is above a tolerable threshold for the patient and mobility has been severely limited. Hip replacement implants are designed to simulate the natural movements of the hip. For some implants, new parts are cemented to the bone. In others, the porous surface of the implant allows bone to grow into the prosthesis.
Four years ago, Stryker was forced to recall hip implants after an FDA investigation revealed that some of its models were defective. Problems included pain around the surgery site, hip implants breaking and requiring surgery to repair, and squeaky joints. After the 2008 recall, Stryker fast-tracked two new hip implant models past clinical testing under a law that allows for less rigorous testing if the product is similar to previous products. Now, in July of 2012, Srtyker has again issued a recall, this time of the new Rejuvenate and ABG II models that were supposed to correct the previous problems. Perhaps due to lack of testing, Styrker did not notice that under certain conditions metal components in the hip implants would rub together, and cause pain and implant failure that would require replacement surgery.
