Is whiplash a neck injury? |
 |
| Yes. Whiplash is an injury to the neck (also called neck sprain or strain) resulting from a sudden extension and then contraction of the neck. Whiplash injury is most commonly the result of the motion caused by an automobile accident. In a sudden stop, the head is usually thrown forward violently, putting a brief but major strain on the neck. This stretches muscles and ligaments in the neck. This is immediately followed by a reflex contraction of the muscles, so that the head then jerks in the opposite direction. While the prognosis is generally good (recover usually takes a few days to a few weeks), the pain and lack of motion can be extremely disruptive to your everyday life until you fully recover. Although most people recover fully, some people may suffer residual head and neck pain, and a small minority develop chronic conditions and severe pain. |
