I don't have medical insurance or any money. Can an attorney help me to get treatment for my slip and fall injuries from a doctor who will not charge me until my case is over?
A personal injury attorney usually has established relationships with chiropractors, orthopedic doctors and other specialists. He may be able to arrange a lien whereby he becomes responsible for your medical bill and pays it once settlement is reached. That means that you don’t pay up front for treatment, but payment to the doctor is a condition of your settlement. In that way, both the attorney and the doctor are deferring their fees until settlement is reached.
It would be rare for a doctor to give a lien to an individual without an attorney. The attorney can also arrange to pay the doctor a percentage of the recovery. That way, if medical bills are high, you will still get a reasonable portion of the settlement, instead of seeing most of the proceeds go towards paying bills.
