There are two basic kinds of amusement rides: mobile and fixed site. Mobile site rides are portable and travel, as with a state or county fair. Fixed site rides are permanently attached, as the rides are in popular amusement parks like Disneyland and Six Flags. The federal government regulates portable amusement rides through the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, but has no such authority over permanent amusement park rides. State oversight of permanent/fixed site rides varies widely: 28 states have established regulations and officials for the purpose of inspecting the premises and maintaining industry standards, but the remaining states rely on insurance audits and 3rd party inspections to regulate safety compliance.
