My doctor prescribed Zyprexa to treat my bi-polar disorder. I have now developed diabetes. My doctor says that my diabetes was caused by genetics – I have an extensive family history of diabetes. Is it even worth trying to prove that there is a connection between my Zyprexa usage and my diabetes?

Absolutely. A family history of diabetes increases your risk of developing diabetes as well; however, even an extensive family history of diabetes does not mean that you absolutely will develop diabetes yourself. You may have started out at a higher risk and using Zyprexa pushed you over the edge. Or, although you may have developed diabetes someday without the Zyprexa, you may have had many years without diabetes.

The FDA felt that Zyprexa’s warning should specifically say that patients taking Zyprexa should be monitored for diabetes, particularly if the patient had a family history of diabetes. You are exactly the patient that the FDA was concerned about. Your doctor should have been very cautious in proceeding with prescribing Zyprexa for you and should have been monitoring you for symptoms of developing diabetes all along.

You probably have a case against both Eli-Lilly and your doctor. You should talk to an attorney who is experienced in dealing with these types of cases as soon as possible.
