Zevalin, generic ibritumomab tiuxetan, is manufactured by Biogen Idec, Inc., the fourth largest pharmaceutical company in the world. Zevalin is a form of cancer treatment called radiommunotherapy in which a drug targets certain cells and carries radiation directly to the cancerous cells. This is the Zevalin claim. Zevalin is used to treat various forms of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2002.
Zevalin is made from blood plasma and carries radiation to white blood cells. It’s name differs with the radioisotope it is carrying. It is known as In-111 Zevalin when it delivers indium-111 to the cancerous cells and Y-90 Zevalin when it carries yttrium-90.
