My husband’s doctor prescribed Neurontin to treat his bi-polar disorder. He committed suicide while he was on Neurontin. We believe his use of Neurontin led to his suicide attempt. How can we prove this?

The link between suicide and Neurontin is still not clear. However, there are many people who believe that there is a link, and many experienced attorneys who have handled cases like this. Pfizer has admitted that it promoted several off-label uses for Neurontin, including stating that it was effective in treating bi-polar disorder. Whether or not the Neurontin was actively responsible for your husband’s suicide, it would follow that your husband, who was in effect receiving no treatment whatsoever for his bi-polar disorder, was very likely to commit suicide. In this case, Pfizer would probably be found to be grossly negligent and would be held liable for your husband’s death as a result.

You will need to gather together the medical records showing your husband’s disorder as well as other treatments and why Neurontin was chosen. Your husband’s doctor may be able to assist you with this, particularly if there are records showing your husband’s condition worsened, or at least did not get better, after starting to take Neurontin.
