Propofol Lawsuit: The Hepatitis C Case
The other recent Propofol case resulted in a $500 M jury award for the plaintiffs ($356 against Propofol manufacturer Teva; $144 against Propofol distributor Baxter). The case was brought by Henry Chanin, who was infected with Hepatitis C during an endoscopy procedure in which he was given Propofol from a reused vial. Chanin's lawyers argued that the warnings that came with the Propofol vial was insufficient and that Teva should not have distributed such large vials of Propofol to endoscopy centers because that tempted nurses to reuse them.
Recent Propofol Recalls
Hospira recently recalled several batches of Propofol after it discovered that some vials might be contaminated with stainless steel particles. Teva recalled several batches of Propofol because some vials had elevated levels of endotoxins.
Current Concerns: Propofol Infusion Syndrome
There are concerns about the use of Propofol for patients undergoing long-term treatment with the drug. Such use could result in Propofol Infusion Syndrome, which could lead to cardiac failure, rhabdomyolysis, metabolic acidosis and renal failure.
If you or a loved one has suffered harm as a result of the use of Propofol, seek legal help immediately to protect your rights.
