Menactra Vaccine Side Effects – Guillaine Barre Syndrome

A September 30, 2005 press release and October 10, 2005 alert from the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) revealed that officials had received five reports of Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS), which occurred after the administration of the Menactra Vaccine. The FDA and CDC are gathering information to determine if GBS is a Menactra Vaccine side effect.

The five reported cases of GBS connected to the Menactra Vaccine occurred in 17- and 18-year-olds in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. All the teenagers are recovering.

GBS is a serious neurological disorder the can produce paralysis and permanent neurological damage. The majority of those affected recover, but recovery may take weeks or months and may require hospitalization. The symptoms of GBS are weakness or abnormal sensations in the arms and legs occurring two to fours weeks after the administration of the vaccine.

GBS occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to foreign invaders. The immune response creates inflammation in the nerves and degrades the myelin sheaths. This damage interferes with the nerve’s ability to transmit impulses. GBS can occur spontaneously and has been caused by infections, vaccinations, surgical procedures, and traumatic injury. GBS was shown to have been a side effect of the swine flue vaccine during the swine flu outbreak of 1976.
