Menactra Vaccine Side Effects and Risks

The FDA (Federal Drug Administration) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) issued a Menactra Vaccine alert on October 10, 2005 asking that the public and health care providers notify them of any links between the Menactra Vaccine and Guillain Barr Syndrome (GBS), a serious neurological disorder that can result in paralysis and permanent disability.

The alert pointed out that officials do not yet know if the GBS was caused by the Menactra Vaccine or if the occurrence was coincidental. Because GBS is such a serious disorder it is important to investigate the possibility that GBS is a Menactra Vaccine side effect. The FDA and CDC asked anyone who has any information about the occurrence of GBS after vaccination with Menactra to contact the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). The FDA will continue to evaluate the relationship between the Menactra Vaccine and GBS to determine if GBS is a Menactra Vaccine risk.

At this time the CDC does not recommend any suspension of the Menactra vaccination program. If you or your child is scheduled for a Menactra vaccination, you can discuss the risks with your health care provider.
