Darvon/Darvocet Side Effects Cause FDA Ban

Darvon/Darvocet side effects like heart arrhythmia, heart attack, suicide, liver and kidney problems, addiction, overdose and death have caused the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to ban these long used pain killers – which many believe that, if done years ago, could have saved hundreds or even thousands of lives.

Darvocet/Darvon Side Effects: FDA Says Risks Too High

The FDA has said that Darvocet/Darvon side effects are simply too risky to allow these drugs to remain on the market. It has notified Darvon/Darvocet manufacturer, Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, and has reached out to other manufacturers whose products also contain propoxyphene – a pain killer which has been on the market for over 50 years and is primarily used to manage post-surgical pain.

Numerous individuals, groups and associations have petitioned the FDA to ban these drugs over the past 30 years due to known side effects such as:

  • addiction
  • cardiac depression
  • decreased ability for the heart to contract properly
  • heart arrhythmia
  • heart attack
  • interruption of heart transmission of electrical impulses
  • kidney problems
  • liver dysfunction
  • psychological dependence
  • slowing heartbeats
  • suicide
  • yellowed eyes and skin

Many of those petitions claimed that other, safer drugs such as simply ibuprofen or acetaminophen were just as effective, less expensive and could be taken with very little risk.

Thousands Of Lives Could Have Been Saved

That's what many are saying about the delay in banning Darvon and Darvocet from the market until now. They point to data from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) which published that Darvocet, Darvon and generic propoxyphene drugs were responsible for 5% of ALL drug-related deaths in a nearly 20 period from 1987 to 2006.

Even though the FDA had the final say, Darvon/Darvocet injury lawyers say that Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals – and possibly one time manufacturer Eli Lilly – knew about the dangers of these drugs, but never pulled them off the market because they were simply too profitable.

However, the tables are now turning. Hundreds of Darvon/Darvocet lawsuits are now being filed and anyone who was injured by these drugs should contact a Darvocet/Darvon attorney to access their situation or that of a loved one who may have died due to these defective and dangerous drugs.
