Wright PROFEMUR Hip Lawsuit Alleges 11.2% Failure Rate

A Wright PROFEMUR hip lawsuit recently filed in Colorado alleges that Wright PROFEMUR Total Hip System has an astonishing failure rate of 11.2%. The lawsuit calls the hip implant system defective because the design itself increases the potential for corrosion and failure.

What Is The Wright PROFEMUR Total Hip Implant System?

The Wright PROFEMUR Total Hip System is supposed to provide surgeons with a modular approach to total hip arthroplasty. The neck of the implant is modular and can be adjusted for length, which should aid in matching implants to host bone and allow soft tissue balancing and restoration of the hip joint center of rotation.

However, it just doesn't seem to work. In fact, it was recently reported that the system has a failure rate of 11.2% – causing the patients who were implanted with the Wright PROFEMUR Total Hip Implant System to become weary. And rightfully so.

Wright PROFEMUR Hip Replacement Lawsuit

A product liability lawsuit filed by a Colorado man against the Wright Medical Group alleges that one of his two implanted Wright PROFEMUR Total Hip Systems failed only 3 ½ years after it was implanted. That man, Glenn Wollam, had the double hip implant in 2005 which included a Conserve Plus Cup, Conserve Total Femoral Head, Wright Modular Femoral Neck and PROFEMUR E Cementless Stem – all parts of the total hip system. Like so many other hip implant patients, Wollam assumed that these medical devices would last for years to come.

However, in October of 2008, the femoral neck of the left side of the system broke during regular usage – causing Wollam to suffer severe pain and forcing him to undergo another painful, time consuming and expensive hip implant. He is now permanently impaired, disfigured and has filed a Wright PROFEMUR Hip Lawsuit against the company alleging that the system is:

  • negligently and defectively designed – as evidenced by an 11.2% failure rate in 3 years
  • subject to degradation, fretting, corrosion, wear, fatigue and loading
  • unreasonably dangerous in that the neck was manufactured in a manner as to be subject to bend, leading to rapid deterioration and an increased risk of failure
