Federal lawsuits concerning Organon International’s contraceptive device, Nuva Ring, have been consolidated and will be heard by Judge Rodney W. Sippel in the Eastern District of Missouri court system.
What does consolidation mean?
When similar lawsuits are filed throughout the nation, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation often consolidates them so that the same issues are not being litigated in different parts of the nation and by different judges. It’s an efficiency measure and is different from a class action lawsuit in that each case remains separate and is transferred back to its original venue if the multidistrict litigation process does not resolve the issue.

Why Missouri? The litigation was consolidated in Missouri as one case, Jenn v. Organon International, had progressed further than similar cases that have been filed throughout the nation – which is believed to be well over 50 at this point in time.
What is the issue with Nuva Ring?
Nuva Ring is a contraceptive device made by Organon International and it is estimated that over two million woman currently use the device. It is a transparent, flexible vaginal ring that is used for three out of four weeks per month. During the three weeks of use, Nuva Ring provides continuous doses of estrogen and progestin and is marketed as being as effective as birth control pills. Although approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001, Nuva Ring has been linked to serious blood clotting that may have caused several deaths already.
The New England Journal of Medicine published a study which reported that women who used NuvaRing had an increased risk of developing blood clots (as compared to traditional birth control pills) and the FDA changed the package labeling for NuvaRing to include warnings of bleeding irregularities and valvular heart disease.
