The person who caused my slip and fall injury has no money or insurance. What can I do as my medical and physical therapy bills are piling up?
In the vast majority of cases, insurance coverage is the key for you to collect anything. How do you know for certain there is no coverage? An attorney may be able to determine that there is another party who has some liability, maybe as a result of a marriage or business arrangement. Also, people have different ideas about what it means to have “no money.” If the matter is serious enough, you could consider going after their assets, such as bank accounts or property. But as a general rule, this is not the way personal injury cases are handled.
If you have limited income, yet need continued care, you may be considered medically indigent, and could be eligible for government assistance in some states. That would require going to particular clinics or doctors, though. In many areas, community hospitals will excuse an emergency room bill if you cannot pay.
In a worst case scenario, if you have large expenses and have assets such as a home that you need to protect, you can also consider filing for bankruptcy. But an attorney may also be able to get your bills reduced by negotiating with your creditors. |
