Many patients have reported withdrawal symptoms when they discontinued taking Zoloft and mothers who took Zoloft during their pregnancies have reported withdrawal symptoms in newborn babies. In July 2004, the Pediatric Advisory Subcommittee of the FDA advised the FDA to require new warnings on Zoloft and other similar drugs for pregnant mothers and their heathcare providers.
A University of California at San Diego study released February 9, 2006 has revealed a significant increase of very serious lung problems in newborns whose mothers took SRRIs after the 20th week of pregnancy. The lung problem, persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPH), is fatal soon after birth in 10 to 20 percent of cases. Survivors may need mechanical aids to breathe and may suffer developmental delays, hearing loss, and brain abnormalities. Pregnant women should consult their physicians about this possible Zoloft side effect before taking Zoloft during pregnancy.
