Zoloft Side Effects and Risks

Studies have linked Zoloft and other SSRI antidepressants with several types of injury to infants whose mothers take antidepressants during pregnancy. These include severe withdrawal symptoms, including sleep disturbances. Infants also suffer serious developmental birth defects and a potentially life-threatening lung disorder, persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), as well as an increased risk of premature and stillbirths.

The FDA reported on the study of infants with PPHN, but has not required warnings about birth defects on any antidepressant except Paxil.
A University of California at San Diego study released February 9, 2006 revealed a significant increase of very serious lung problems in newborns whose mothers took SSRIs after the 20th week of pregnancy. The lung problem, persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), is fatal soon after birth in 10 to 20 percent of cases. Survivors may need mechanical aids to breathe and may suffer developmental delays, hearing loss, and brain abnormalities.

Studies have also shown that Zoloft poses a risk of increased suicidal thoughts and activity in adults as well as children, prompting the FDA to post a Public Health Advisory warning on July 1, 2005, revealing that several publications had reported “the possibility of increased risk of suicidal behavior in adults treated with antidepressants.” In December 2006, the FDA announced that it would review the risks of suicide in young adults, and on May 2, 2007 the FDA proposed a new warning about suicide in young adults who take antidepressants.

The FDA has issued 2 other warnings in recent years. The first, in 2006, was that SSRIs like Zoloft can cause a life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome if taken with migraine medication (triptans). The second warning, in October 2006, was that patients taking antidepressants can overdose and shouldn’t be given too many pills at once.
