Zelnorm Side Effects Heart Attack, Stroke & Angina
The most serious side effects of Zelnorm are those that led the Food and Drug Administration to request that the manufacturer, Novarits Pharmaceuticals, take the drug off the U.S. market in March 2007. Those are:
- Heart attacks
- Strokes
- Severe angina (chest pain).
Other serious and potentially deadly Zelnorm side effects are:
- Diarrhea that can lead to dehydration and hospitalization
- Intestinal ischemia (reduced blood flow to the intestines) that can lead to:
- Rectal bleeding
- Bloody diarrhea
- New or worsening abdominal pain
- Syncope
- Gangrenous bowels
- Bile duct stones
- Cholecystitis.
Other less serious Zelnorm side effects include:
- Headache
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Dizziness.

Patients who are taking Zelnorm are advised to contact their health care providers right away to consult about other treatment options. These patients should seek emergency medical help immediately if they suffer the following symptoms:
