Drug Overview: Viagra, Cialis & Levitra Side Effects and Claims

Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra are the three leading drugs on the market for erectile dysfunction (ED). Viagra, generic sildenfil citrate, is manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, and was the first of these ED drugs to be released. Viagra was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in March 1998. Levitra, generic vardenafil, was the second ED drug released on the U.S. market. Levitra is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and Bayer, and it was approved by the FDA in September 2003. The third drug to arrive on the market was Cialis, manufactured by Eli Lilly & Co. Cialis, generic tadalafil, received FDA approval in November 2003.

These ED drugs are different from earlier drugs in that they don’t cause penile erection directly. The Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra claim is that they aid erection by helping to relax smooth muscles and dilate blood vessels in a way that increases the blood flow into the penis to produce an erection. Cialis makes an additional claim that it stays in the body longer than the other ED drugs.

These drugs were the focus of controversy first because of evidence that they increase the risk of cardiac problems in men with any history of cardiac events, and more recently because of reports that these ED drugs increase the risk of a stroke in the optic nerve, causing blindness. See Drug Warnings: Viagra, Cialis & Levitra Side Effects and Risks for information on FDA warnings, and Viagra, Cialis & Levitra Information and Warnings for more information about the safety of these ED drugs.
