The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) patient news in June 2004 announced that the FDA had asked the manufacturers of atypical or second-generation antipsychotic drugs, including Seroquel, to add a new warning to the labels that these drugs increase the risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes. Japan’s pharmaceutical regulatory agency has taken a stronger action and has required a prominent label announcing a link between atypical antipsychotic drugs like Seroquel and diabetes.
In April 2005, the FDA issued an alert that Seroquel and other second-generation antipsychotics have been linked to a higher risk of death in older patients who are prescribed Seroquel for dementia. Seroquel is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of dementia.
