Seroquel Information and Warnings

Seroquel, generic quetiapine fumarate, is an atypical antipsychotic drug manufactured by AstraZeneca. It’s called an atypical antipsychotic, because it is one of the second generation of antipsychotics which were developed to avoid the loss of motor control produced by earlier drugs.

As early as 2003 a study revealed dangers associated with these drugs. That study found that second-generation antipsychotic drugs like Seroquel create an increased risk of diabetes in patients who take them. This study was done on 19,978 U.S. military veterans. As a result of this link between Seroquel and diabetes some of the most prestigious medical associations, including the American Diabetes Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, have joined in warning that patients taking Seroquel and similar drugs should be carefully monitored for signs of diabetes.

Though the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) warned as early as 2005 that drugs like Seroquel increase the risk of death in elderly dementia patients and are not approved for the treatment of dementia, prescriptions of antipsychotics for the elderly suffering from dementia have increased at an alarming rate.

If you’re taking Seroquel, make sure that your health care provider is monitoring your blood-sugar levels carefully for signs of diabetes. If you or a loved one has been injured because of Seroquel use, you may be entitled to recover damages for that injury. Your first step is to have your Seroquel case evaluated by an experienced attorney. See Seroquel Attorney and Lawyer – How to Hire to find an attorney to help you.
