Drug-Toxic Chemicals
Serevent Side Effects and Claims

Serevent is an asthma drug manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 1994. Serevent, known by the generic name salmeterol xinafoate, is an aerosol spray used twice a day to control the symptoms of asthma. The Serevent claim is that a dose controls asthma symptoms for 12 hours.

A study conducted by GlaxoSmithKline beginning in 1996 indicated that asthma-related deaths may be a Serevent side effect. The FDA eventually required a black box warning and suggested that the use of the drug be restricted. See Drug Warning: Serevent Side Effects and Risks for information about FDA actions, and Serevent Information and Warnings for details of the Serevent study.
