Drug Warning: Prozac Side Effects and Risks
Prozac, Eli Lilly’s antidepressant, has been a marketing success for the company. Eli Lilly defended or settled hundreds of lawsuits in the 1990s claiming that Prozac made people suicidal and violent for a total settlement amount that equaled a little over one week’s revenues at the peak of Prozac sales. In 2005 the facts caught up with Prozac’s manufacturer, and in July 2005 the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) finally required a black box warning, the most serious level of warning available, that Prozac and other antidepressants may cause suicidal thoughts or actions in both children and adults. In the required Prozac warning, the FDA recommended that any patient prescribed Prozac should be closely monitored for increases in suicidal thinking.
