Prozac Lawsuits, Litigation & Lawyers – What You Should Know

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Eli Lilly claiming that its antidepressant Prozac caused both suicide and violent behavior in some people who took it. Several of those Prozac lawsuits were highlighted in the news.

A report in 2001 described a lawsuit by the widow of a man whose husband committed suicide after taking Prozac for only 3 days. He threw the pills away, but when he committed suicide 4 days later, high levels of Prozac’s active ingredient, fluoxetine, were found in his blood. The Prozac lawsuit argued that Eli Lilly knew and concealed that the drug was hard for some people to metabolize. A widower also sued for damages for the suicide of his wife after she took Prozac for migraines.

Some people claimed that Prozac had made them commit violent acts. One 27-year-old man claimed that Prozac made him fire 20 times into a bar, killing 2 and injuring 3. The so-called Prozac defense was successful in at least one case. In 2000, an insurance agent who robbed a bank was acquitted by a Connecticut judge because the defendant had been prescribed Prozac and Xanax.

A series of articles on Eli Lilly’s defense of these suits claims that the manufacturer managed to settle hundreds cases of Prozac litigation for as little as $50 million, which was the amount of Prozac sales in about one week at the height of its success. Eli Lilly’s success in these cases is all the more surprising, because documents obtained from Eli Lilly during that litigation indicate that the manufacturer knew about the danger of suicide as early as 1990 and that Eli Lilly paid $90 million to acquire a formulation that would not produce as many suicidal thoughts.
