Prozac Information and Warnings

Prozac, also known by the generic name fluoxetine, is manufactured by Eli Lilly. After an enormous amount of controversy and litigation (See Prozac Lawsuits, Litigation & Lawyers – What You Should Know ), it now carries a black box warning that it may cause suicidal thoughts and activity in both children and adults. See Drug Warning: Prozac Side Effects and Risks for details on the Prozac warning.

Studies released in 2006 have raised concerns about possible new Prozac side effects. The February 9, 2006 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine published a study that found SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, including Prozac, appear to increase the rate of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) if taken by the mother after the 20th week of pregnancy. PPHN is a serious condition that can result in death and permanent disability including brain damage and deafness. It may require intensive-care treatment.

The results of a Duke University study of the effects of antidepressants on patients suffering from coronary artery disease were released in April 2006. Use of antidepressants by people with coronary artery disease appeared to increase the risk of death by 62 %. The researchers warned that the deaths might be caused by other factors related to depression, but will conduct further studies to see if Prozac and other antidepressants actually cause death in people with coronary artery disease.
