Protopic Information and Warnings

Protopic is a topical treatment approved by the FDA (Federal Food and Drug Administration) for the treatment of eczema, a condition characterized by red, scaly, itchy skin. Eczema is a common medical condition, and Protopic has been used by millions of people around the world, including very small children.

In 2005 the FDA received the results of animal studies that showed an increase in both skin cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma when Protopic or a similar eczema drug, Elidel, were used. The risk of cancer increased with the dosage of Protopic or Elidel used. The FDA also received reports of cases of cancer linked to the use of Protopic and Elidel. This evidence convinced the FDA to require its highest level of warning, a black box warning, for these drugs. See Drug Warning: Protopic Side Effects and Risks for information about the FDA’s warnings and recommendations for the use of Protopic

If you or a family member has used or is using Protopic, you should consult your health care provider immediately to discuss alternative treatment possibilities. The FDA recommends that you use Protopic only after all other treatment possibilities have failed, and that you use the lowest effective dose. If you have developed cancer after using Protopic, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
