Drug Warnings: Plavix Side Effects and Risk
Plavix (generic clopitogrel) has been marketed as an alternate to aspirin for preventing heart attacks and strokes caused by blood clotting. Plavix is called a blood thinner or super aspirin, and prevents the formation of platelets in the blood responsible for clotting. Plavix is manufactured internationally by Sanofi Synthelabo and in the U.S. by Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Recent studies have created concern that Plavix raises the risk of death from internal hemorrhage and that this risk outweighs any benefit that Plavix might have over the much less expensive aspirin in preventing heart attacks or strokes. In other words, patients who take Plavix are at risk for bleeding because their blood does not clot normally. See Plavix Information and Warnings for information about those studies and the safety of Plavix. The FDA (Federal Drug Administration) has not yet responded to the most recent study with any recommendation or warning.
Plavix is the second-best-selling drug in the world, and agencies in other countries have raised concerns. Health Canada, Canada’s drug regulatory agency, has reported 2 cases of hepatitis in elderly women patients taking Plavix, while Australia’s regulatory agency has reported 18 fatalities linked to an increased risk of gastrointestinal hemorrhage in Plavix patients.
