Drug Overview: Neurontin Side Effects and Claims

Neurontin, generic gabapentin, is a drug that affects the chemicals and nerves in the body that are linked to epileptic seizures and some kinds of pain related to the nervous system. Neurontin was approved by the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) for the treatment of epileptic seizures in 1994.

Despite the limited market for this use of Neurontin, the drug became a blockbuster with sales of $1.3 billion a year. The drug manufacturer realized this hefty profit by claiming Neurontin could be used for a variety of uses not approved by the FDA. This kind of promotion of “off label” uses by a drug manufacturer is illegal because the drug had not been tested for safety or tested for effectiveness for off-label uses. (It is not illegal for a doctor to prescribe a drug for off-label purposes.) See Neurontin Lawsuits, Litigation, and Lawyers for information about criminal proceedings against the manufacturer.

Neurontin was originally manufactured by Parke-Davis, until Parke-Davis was taken over by Pfizer in 2000. After that time Neurontin was handled by the Warner-Lambert section of Pfizer, the world’s largest pharmaceutical company. According to Pfizer, 12 million people have used Neurontin in 60 countries. Critics have estimated that as much as 80% of the uses were for off-label purposes.
