Neurontin Lawsuits, Litigation & Lawyers – What You Should Know

Neurontin, marketed by the international pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer, has been one of the most notorious examples of illegal and fraudulent marketing in the pharmaceutical industry. Neurontin was approved by the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) for epileptic seizures, to be used in addition to other drugs. Pfizer’s Warner-Lambert division aggressively promoted it for the treatment of many other conditions, including:
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Pain syndromes, peripheral neuropathy, and diabetic neuropathy
  • Treatment of epilepsy alone (as monotherapy)
  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD)
  • Attention deficit disorder (ADD)
  • Restless leg syndrome (RLS)
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Post-hepatic neuralgia (PHN)
  • Essential tremor periodic limb movement
  • Migraine
  • Drug and alcohol withdrawal seizures

There have been no studies showing that Neurontin is effective in treating these ailments or that it’s safe to use in treating the above conditions.

After federal prosecution, Warner-Lambert agreed in 2004 to pay $430 million for its illegal and fraudulent promotions of Neurontin. This was only a miniscule portion of the profits the company collected from its illegal promotion of its blockbuster drug. Warner-Lambert then faced several civil lawsuits filed on behalf of people who suffered adverse side effects.

In 2004 the wife of a Boston football coach who died after taking Neurontin for an unapproved use joined a class action suit against the drug in Massachusetts, calling Neurontin the modern “snake oil.” Also in 2004 the New York law firm of Finkelstein & Partners filed at least five Neurontin lawsuits and planned to file many more. The firm’s senior partner claimed that he had gathered the names of 160 people who committed suicide and 2000 more who attempted suicide while taking Neurontin.

Lawsuits were also filed on behalf of people who suffered adverse side effects when Neurontin was prescribed for uses, like the treatment of bi-polar disorder or drug and alcohol withdrawal. Because of Pfizer’s illegal marketing, millions of people were unnecessarily exposed to a long list of side effects.

I’ve found all kinds of information about how Pfizer marketed Neurontin for off-label uses and the problems it caused. Why should I go to an attorney when it seems that I should be able to negotiate a settlement with the company on my own? Or would there be a benefit to joining a class action in my case?

My husband’s doctor prescribed Neurontin to treat his bi-polar disorder. He committed suicide while he was on Neurontin. We believe his use of Neurontin led to his suicide attempt. How can we prove this?
