Drug Warnings: Mirapex Side Effects and Risks

Mirapex, a medication for Parkinson’s disease, is manufactured and distributed by Germany’s Boehringer-Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in New York. It’s prescribed for Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome, depression, and sleep disorders.

Mirapex has been the focus of controversy since a 2003 and a 2005 study showed that Mirapex has been linked to compulsive pleasure-seeking behavior, particularly compulsive gambling, in patients who have taken it for Parkinson’s. See Mirapex Information and Warnings for details on the studies and more information of Mirapex safety.

One plaintiff in a Mirapex lawsuit, Joe Neglia, says that he has reported his experiences of compulsive gambling to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). An FDA spokesperson says that the FDA is reviewing reports of compulsive behavior linked to Mirapex. So far the FDA hasn’t revealed the number of reports it has received or taken any action on Mirapex side effects.

A spokesperson in the U.S. headquarters of Boehringer-Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals has stated that there’s no scientific evidence that Mirapex causes compulsive gambling. Nonetheless, Boehringer-Ingelheim revised the package insert for Mirapex in 2005 to include a Mirapex warning that compulsive gambling is a possible Mirapex risk.
