Drug Overview: Elidel Side Effects and Claims
Elidel, manufactured by Novartis, was approved by the FDA (Federal Drug Administration in 2001 and is used to treat eczema, rosacea, and atopic dermatitis, conditions often characterized by red, scaly, itchy skin. An estimated 15 million Americans suffer from eczema, about 20 percent of them children. About 12 million prescriptions have been filled for Elidel and a similar drug, Protopic, in the few years these drugs have been on the market. The Elidel claim is that it is a non-steroid treatment for eczema that can be used by children as well as adults.

The FDA has required a boxed warning, the most serious level of warning required for only 10 percent of prescription drugs, that Elidel may be linked to cancer and should be used very sparingly.
