Drug Overview: Effexor Side Effects and Claims
Effexor, generic name venlafaxine, is manufactured by Wyeth, and is known as a SNRI or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. This drug was approved by the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) in March 2004 for the treatment of depression and anxiety. The main Effexor claim is that it increases the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the spaces between the cells in the brain and that these increased levels allow more efficient transmission of electrical signals to the brain and increase patients’ feelings of well being.

The FDA issued a Public Advisory warning in July 2005 that Effexor might cause an increase in suicide and suicidal thoughts, particularly in teenagers, and recommended close monitoring of all patients for suicidal thoughts or behavior. Recent studies have raised concern about other side effects including birth defects, infant persistent pulmonary hypertension, and death in patients with coronary artery disease.
