SSRI drugs have been the target of many lawsuits across the US because of suicides and attempted suicides in patients taking the SSRI drugs. Several attempts have also been made to claim damages caused by the violent behavior of people taking these drugs. In 2001 a jury in Wyoming awarded damages to the family of Donald Schell who killed family members and then himself. SSRI use has been linked to several school shootings by adolescents, including the shootings at Columbine High.
Litigation can be expected regarding birth defects and infant diseases linked to SRRI use by mothers during pregnancy.
Wyeth, the manufacturer of Effexor, was reprimanded by the FDA in 2004 for misleading advertising in its promotional materials with respect to the safety and effectiveness of Effexor. Wyeth’s honesty in advertising and warning about side effects will most likely be at issue in Effexor litigation.
