Depakote: Lawsuits, Litigation & Lawyers

Semisodium valproate (a compound of sodium valproate and valproic acid) is a medicine used in the drug Depakote to treat migraines, seizure disorders and manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. One of the most serious side effects of using semisodium valproate is the higher than average incidence of birth defects that result when the drug is taken during pregnancy. While Depakote has been marketed as a treatment for psychiatric conditions, Epilim, a drug used in the UK and also containing sodium valproate, has been marketed for epilepsy.

Both drugs have come under scrutiny for the seriousness of their side effects. In the UK, a class action lawsuit involving the drug Epilim is underway, brought by parents of children who are claimed to have been disabled by the drug while the mother was taking the anti-convulsant drug. Birth defects range from cleft palate and spina bifida to learning difficulties and behavioral problems.
