Cylert Side Effects: Liver Failure

Abbott Laboratories’ product Cylert and all other products marketed under the generic name pemoline were banned in the US after they were found to cause liver failure in some patients. The FDA (Federal Drug Administration) found that the risk of side effects outweighed the benefits of this medication because there are several other, safer drugs available to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Abbott agreed to voluntarily stop manufacture of Cylert in May 2005, and the manufacturers of generic versions of the product also agreed to stop manufacturing their products. The FDA issued a formal ban on Cylert all pemoline products in October 2005.

The FDA received 13 reports of liver failure in patients after taking Cylert. In 11 of those cases the patients needed a liver transplant or died within four weeks of the beginning of symptoms of liver problems. In the earliest case, symptoms began 6 months after the beginning of treatment with Cylert. The consumer advocacy group Public Citizen reports 21 cases of liver failure linked to Cylert. There were other side effects, and reports made to the FDA show that at least 193 patients have suffered serious adverse effects from the drug.

The primary and most serious symptoms of liver problems are dark urine and jaundice. There are also other symptoms that can point toward liver damage, including:

  • Anorexia
  • Malaise
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms.

One of the main concerns about liver failure as a Cylert side effect is that in most cases the less serious symptoms were not reported before jaundice began. It is difficult to predict when liver failure will occur.

Other Cylert (pemoline) side effects include:

  • Stunting growth in children
  • Muscle twitches
  • Mental confusion
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Seizures
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Hallucinations
  • Restlessness
  • Uncontrolled movements
  • Vomiting
  • Fever

If you or your child has been injured after taking Cylert or a generic version of the drug, you may be able to recover damages for those injuries. You should contact a qualified drug litigation attorney to evaluate your case.
