Cylert Information and Warnings
Cylert is the brand name for a form of norepinephrine manufactured by Abbott Laboratories for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The same chemical, the generic drug pemoline, was marketed by other manufacturers for the treatment of ADHD. Cylert was approved for the US market by the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) in 1975, and then banned 30 years later when the FDA found that the risk of its use is greater than the benefits. Cylert was mainly used to treat children.

Cylert and other pemoline products were banned by the FDA after the FDA received reports of 13 cases of liver failure, 11 of them resulting in a liver transplant or death. Other drugs are available to treat ADHD that don‘t present such serious risks of side effects. The FDA’s official ban went into effect in October 2005, though Abbot and the manufacturers of the generic forms of pemoline had agreed to stop manufacturing those products in May 2005. The October ruling only prevented other companies from beginning to offer pemoline products.
Though manufacture was banned, Cylert and other pemoline products that had already been manufactured could be distributed and sold. Some physicians continued to write prescriptions for Cylert after the ban had gone into effect. After several months the FDA warned physicians to use other medications for ADHD.
If you or your child has been prescribed Cylert or a generic pemoline product, you should consult with your health care provider about a change of medication.
