ADHD Drugs Information and Warnings
On March 22, 2006 the FDA’s pediatric advisory committee voted to recommend a less stringent warning to be placed on prescription drugs, for ADHD drugs such as Ritalin, Adderall, Focalin, Methylin, Metadate, and Conderta., and the FDA has said it would follow the second recommendation. This was a reversal of another advisory panel’s recommendations (February 6, 2006) that the FDA require black box warnings on such drugs.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) is described as a disorder characterized by inattention and restlessness. Critics argue that this is not a psychological condition in most people and should not be treated with medication. In spite of the controversy surrounding the diagnosis and treatment, the prescription rate for ADHD drugs has skyrocketed in recent years, and these medications have been prescribed for adults as well as children. This increase in use was part of the reason some FDA panel members urged strong warnings for these drugs.
Cardiologist Steven Nissen of the Cleveland Clinic, a member of the panel voting for the black box warning, expressed concern about the increased use of these drugs by adults. Adults are at risk because of higher rates of heart attacks in people over 50.
Curt Furberg, a professor of public health sciences at Wake Forest University Medical School, another panel member, expressed concerns about the large percentage of children being given these medications.
If you or your child has been prescribed drugs such as Ritalin, Adderall, Focalin, Methylin, Metadate, and Conderta, you should talk to your health care provider about the risks of sudden death, heart attacks, and strokes. If you or your child has been injured or a family member has died after using any of these drugs, you may be entitled to receive damages. You should check with a qualified ADHD drug attorney to have your case evaluated.
