Drug Overview: Adderall Side Effects and Claims
Adderall or Adderall XR, distributed by Shire Pharmaceuticals, is a medication for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in both children over 6 and in adults. ADHD is characterized by restlessness, an inability to focus, difficulty sitting still, and difficulty controlling impulses. Critics claim either that ADHD is not really a disorder or that it’s a disorder that is being grossly over-diagnosed and that ADHD drugs are being prescribed as a universal solution to behavior problems in children. In spite of this controversy, the sale of ADHD drugs has become a multibillion-dollar business. Sales of Adderall XR were $759 million in the U.S. in 2004 and $10 million in Canada.

The sale of Adderall in the U.S. was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2002, and it is estimated that Adderall is now used by about 200,000 people, both children and adults. The Adderall claim is that the drug is released in the body in a way that creates a smoother effect, with softer highs and lows than other ADHD medications.
Adderall, generic amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, has been the focus of concern over serious Adderall side effects. See Drug Warnings: Adderall Side Effects and Risks for information on FDA actions and Adderall Information and Warnings for information about the safety of Adderall.
