Drug Warnings: ACE Inhibitors Side Effects and Risks
ACE Inhibitors, drugs used to lessen the constriction of blood vessels and lower blood pressure, have long been known to cause birth defects. For a list of ACE Inhibitors see Drug Overview: ACE Inhibitors Side Effects and Claims.
ACE Inhibitors already carry a black box warning, the most serious warning issued by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). In the 1990s the FDA required manufacturers of ACE Inhibitors to place a sticker on ACE Inhibitors that warns that taking the drugs during the last two-thirds of pregnancy can cause skull deformities, kidney failure, lung problems for the child, or even fetal death.
A recent study published in the June 8, 2006 issue 23 of The New England Journal of Medicine has found evidence that ACE Inhibitors may cause birth defects if taken in the first trimester as well. See ACE Inhibitors Information and Warnings for more information. The FDA has not yet taken action on the basis of that study, but FDA officials are recommending that women not take ACE Inhibitors during pregnancy at all. Sandra Kweder of the Office of New Drugs at the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research has said, "This isn't something to panic about. These are preliminary data, but nonetheless, women should seek to change their medicine as soon as they become pregnant."
