Toyota & Lexus Recalling Nearly Four Million Cars & Trucks Over Safety Issues
The Toyota Motor Company said that it is recalling nearly four million vehicles to address over 100 incidents of the removable driver's side floor mat causing accelerators to stick and lead to a crash. The recall will affect certain models of the Toyota Camry, Avalon, Prius, Tacoma, Tundra and the Lexus ES350, IS250 and IS350.
NHTSA received over 100 incident reports
The National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received over 100 calls in which drivers reported that their floor mats stuck to their accelerators – causing their vehicles to reach speeds of over 100 miles per hour with occupants frantically calling 911 saying that their vehicles were simply out of control. The NHTSA and Toyota have not reported whether the floor mat issue has been responsible for any injuries, although an August 2009 California car accident which killed a highway patrol officer and three members of his family when his 2009 Lexus ES 350 crashed allegedly due to a stuck floor mat, is still being investigated.

Additional consumer information
Toyota is warning owners should check to see whether their floor mats are under their pedals if they think their vehicle is accelerating out of control. If a driver can't remove the floor mat, Toyota advises drivers to step on the brake pedal with both feet until the vehicle slows and then try to put it into neutral and switch the ignition to accessory power. For vehicles with engine start/stop buttons, Toyota said the engine can be shut off by holding the button down for three seconds.
