Shoulder Pain Pumps & PAGCL: Injuries Go Beyond Physical Pain

Shoulder surgery pain pumps, medical devices which are used to treat post-surgical pain from shoulder surgery, have long been linked to PAGCL, or Postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis, which is the dissolution of the cartilage space between the shoulder. While that is an extremely painful physical condition, injured victims say that the depression and anxiety that accompany it can be worse.

Physical & emotional injuries common

Rhett Klok, a South Carolina attorney for over 15 years whose practice focuses in medical health litigation including medical devices, pharmaceuticals and medical malpractice, says that he's seen first hand the physical and emotional injuries that PAGCL patients are going through. He explained:

In many cases, these injuries are either work-related or sports injury-related problems that people are having treated. What's happening in this problem is they go to get it treated and come out in a worse condition than before the surgery. In many cases, they're unable to use their dominant arm.

So, it can be completely disabling for someone to suffer through this and it’s quite possible that their shoulder will never be the same or even what they had hoped for initially from the initial repair surgery. For many clients that I’ve spoken with, the whole situation is extremely depressing, causes a great deal of anxiety and significantly affects their lives.

Product liability lawsuits continue

Klok says that product liability lawsuits continue against the following manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies who supply the medications used in the devices and even some distributors:

  • Manufacturers: Breg; DJO; SMI Liquidating, also known as Sorensen Medical; I-Flow; Moog; McKinley Medical; Stryker Corporation; Oratec Interventions; B. Braun Medical; Sgarlato Laboratories and DePuy.
  • Pharmaceutical companies: APP Pharmaceuticals; Abbott Labs; AstraZeneca; Watson Pharmaceuticals; Abraxix BioScience; Hospira, Inc. and Johnson & Johnson.
  • Distributors: B. Braun Medical, DJO and Pacific Medical.

In fact, he says that his firm is continually talking to clients who fit the above description that have suffered a problem related to pain pump use and that he's been vetting those clients, talking to them and meeting with them.
