Orthopedic Surgeon's 10 Year Study Reveals Stryker Hip Problems

Dr. Todd Swanson, a Nevada Orthopedic Surgeon, recently presented the findings of his 10 year study of ceramic-on-ceramic hip replacement systems at the 2009 American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meeting. His conclusion? Stryker Orthopedic's Trident Acetabular System produces that loudest and most problematic squeaking – something that Stryker hip implant recipients know all too well.

Swanson's study

Dr. Swanson, along with four of his colleagues, conducted a 10 year study of ceramic-on-ceramic hip replacement systems manufactured by four different companies – Plus Orthopedics, Stryker Orthopedics, Wright Medical and Encore Orthopedics. His practice implanted over 300 hip replacement systems from 1999 to 2007 and then followed up with over 85% of those patients to determine which systems squeaked. He concluded that only recipients of Stryker's Trident Acetabular System reported problem squeaking.

While many people might think that a squeaking hip might not be so bad, those who live with it every day think differently. Click here to hear a sample of one implant recipient's Stryker squeaky hip. Now imagine the embarrassment when walking through a grocery, a movie theater or a restaurant. Those situations have caused many patients to become housebound.

Patients complaints

Patients who were fitted with a Stryker hip replacement system have also complained about pain, pieces of ceramic materials breaking off, uneven component wear and difficulty walking – all things that simply shouldn't occur after hip replacement surgery. Unfortunately for patients, Stryker failed to warn consumers about these issues – even though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Stryker Defective Implant lawyers say that the company began receiving complaints as far back as January 2005. These complaints have led to numerous Stryker hip lawsuits.

Stryker hip replacement lawsuits

Hundreds of patients have filed Stryker hip lawsuits against the Michigan-based medical device manufacturer and Howmedica Osteonics Corporation, the New Jersey based company who developed, manufactured, marketed and sold the products to unsuspecting consumers – many of whom have had to undergo additional hip replacement surgery to correct the problem.
