What about the liability of foreign corporations that manufacture or distribute defective products?
With the rise of the global economy, more products and goods manufactured outside the United States are being sold in the U.S. Also, many U.S. companies now "outsource" the production of components to foreign companies, which are then used in a final product which may or may not be manufactured in the U.S. before its sale to an American consumer.
It is possible to sue a foreign corporation for a defective product which they manufactured, since the sale of their product in the U.S. may make the foreign company subject to the jurisdiction of a state or federal court in the United States. However, foreign companies traditionally fight such efforts, and the requirements of properly serving (i.e., notifying) a foreign corporation of their involvement in a lawsuit can be quite technical and laborious. Again, a competent product liability attorney is the best way to protect your interests if you have been injured as a result of a defective product.
