Drowning Hazards And Death Cause Swedish Manufacturer To Recall Diving Suit Air Hoses
SI Tech AB, a Swedish based manufacturer, is recalling approximately 65,000 diving air hoses for dry suits in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The hoses contain an insert that can dislodge during diving and restrict airflow. The company says the hoses pose a drowning hazard and at least one death and six injuries have been reported.
Diving suit air hose recall details
According to a press release from the CPSC, SI Tech AB of Brastad Sweden (SI) is recalling approximately 65,000 Diving Air Hose for Dry Suits that were manufactured in Sweden and sold at diving equipment retailers and distributors nationwide from July of 2006 through February of 2009 for about $45. The death of a Los Angeles California diver has been blamed on the defective air hoses and at least six other injuries have been reported due to the hazard.
According to the CPSC and SI, the dry suit inflation hose connects a diver’s dry suit to the air supply and allows for the pumping of air into the suit to set up a positive pressure arrangement to help keep it watertight. The hoses, which contain an air flow restricting insert that may be either black, blue or green, were sold separately and with dry suits.
Consumers should stop using diving equipment that contains the recalled low pressure inflation hoses and to contact the company for the location of an authorized dealer for a free repair which involves removing the hose insert. Consumers can also receive instructions from the company on how to repair the problem themselves. The company stresses that divers should NOT dive dive with a hose subject to this recall until the insert has been removed by knowledgeable personnel.
