Swelling, Screw Fragmentation & Pockets Of Fluid Build-Up Associated With Calaxo ACL Screw
The Calaxo ACL screw, or the Calaxo Osteoconductive Interference Screw, is manufactured by Smith & Nephew and used in reconstructive ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) knee surgery. Although the product had only been on the market for a short time, patients complained about swelling, screw fragmentation, pockets of fluid build up – and a whole lot of pain.
Calaxo ACL Screw Recall
Smith & Nephew's Calaxo Screw is a bio-absorbable polymer and calcium device that was created to promote bone growth and reabsorb more rapidly in the body and provide patients with a quicker recovery time. The supposed beauty of the medical device was that it helped to secure grafts in the ACL and absorbed into the body in 12 months instead of having to be taken out – meaning one less knee surgery for patients.

Although it was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in March 2006, the manufacturer and the FDA recalled all lot and item codes in August 2007 after receiving numerous complaints of pre-tibial swelling. Some patients were developing soft-tissue swelling only two weeks after surgery, others complained of painful swelling in the ultra-sensitive part of the knee. Others had to undergo debridement (which is the removal of dead or infected tissue and bone) and additional surgeries to remove parts of the screw which had fragmented. Ask anyone who's had ACL surgery and they'll tell you that they'd never want to go through it again.
Calaxo Bone Screw Lawsuits
Numerous Calaxo ACL Screw lawsuits have been filed against Smith & Nephew. These product liability lawsuits generally allege that the manufacturer produced a defective product without adequately testing it first.
